Your Eye Examination

What does an eye examination involve?

Your Optometrist will discuss your occupation and hobbies to build a picture of your daily visual tasks and will also ask about any previous eye history, including that of your family, as some eye problems can be genetic.

Questions will also be asked regarding your General Health and any current medications you may be taking. Please bring an up to date list if possible.

Everyone is different. Therefore at Coton & Hamblin, your eye exam is personally tailored to meet your specific visual needs.

Using a bright light, the health of your eyes is examined. Your Optometrist will discuss their findings with you. If there are any concerns, this is dealt with immediately and a report will be sent to your Doctor including any recommendations for further treatment.

Using the information you have provided whilst speaking with your Optometrist, they will conduct a thorough assessment of your vision and make any necessary recommendations relating to spectacles or contact lenses.

A prescription of your vision and information regarding any of your eye care needs will be provided at the end of the exam.

What should I bring to my eye examination?

  • Any current spectacles or contact lenses
  • List of your current medications
  • National Insurance Number (if in receipt of State Benefits)

Summary of tests:

  • Examine your eye movements and check they are balanced
  • Examination of the internal and external eye. This will involve looking with a bright light.
  • Finding the optimum distance and near vision spectacles that you may require
  • Recommendations for any spectacles or contact lenses
  • Eye pressures (checking the pressure of your eye)
  • Visual fields (this examines how well you see around you- your peripheral vision)
  • Fundus Photographs (this is a photograph of the inside of your eye – its a very good way to monitor any changes)

If you have any worries about the examination, please contact the practice and your Optometrist will be happy to talk these over with you.
