Spectacles & Sunglasses

Lens Options

Single Vision this type of lens offers clear vision at a single distance. Generally for Distance or Reading.

Bifocals These lenses correct vision for Distance and Near within one lens. They are recognised by a line on the lens which divides the distance at the top, from reading at the bottom.

At Coton and Hamblin we like to inform our patients of the variety of lenses available. Below are a few common examples, for more information, contact the practice and speak with one of our qualified Spectacle Dispensers.

Varifocals This type of lens also corrects Distance and Near within one lens, however there is no dividing line. These lenses gradually become stronger for close work as the user looks down the lens. This “blending” of the power is more natural than bifocals and provides a more attractive appearance to the lens.

Coton Hamblin

At Coton and Hamblin we recommend Essilor products - Essilor were the inventors of the first varifocal type lenses - visit their website for further info at www.varilux.co.uk/flash/. There's also a groovy page about checking your computer vision!

Thinner & Lighter For high spectacle lens powers, which can be very thick and heavy, there are lenses available in a thinner and lighter form, making spectacle wear more comfortable and attractive for the patient.

Sunglasses - lens types and options:

  • Tinted Lenses - the shade of the lens is as dark or light as you prefer. We recommend that the lenses are coated against harmful UV rays.
  • Photochromatic / Light Sensitive This form of lens is clear indoors, like a normal spectacle lens. Outdoors the lens appears like sunglasses as it cleverly activates in Sunlight (UV light) and becomes darker. The lenses lighten again indoors. This type of lens is often recommended for patients with Diabetes or Glaucoma.
  • Polarising This form of Sunglass is beneficial to people who suffer with glare, as the lens significantly reduces unwanted reflections, reducing glare and making vision more comfortable. This form of lens is a favourite amongst keen fishermen/women as it reduces the reflections off water, making the fish visible below.

Coatings a number of coatings on the lenses are available such as:

  • Anti Reflective this reduces the reflections off the lens surfaces, again reducing glare and improving contrast. This is highly recommended for Computer Users, Night time driving and for those with Glare difficulties.
  • Hard Coating this is a protective surface added to the lens to help prevent scratching from normal wear and tear.
